Day Forty - 2011

Today we are focusing on Somalia. Today is the last day of the manna project but you can donate to the effort at any time. The hunger crisis in Somalia and East Africa is growing but IDES is doing all that it can to help. Please keep praying for all of those around the world that are starving and for the people that have the opportunity to feed them. Thank you to all that have participated in the manna project but if you have not and still want to it is never too late. You can skip a meal or fast for a day any time and then give that money to the manna project. Donate to the manna project

Day Thirty Five - 2011

Today we are focusing on all those who have or will be fasting during the manna project. There is still time to pick a day and fast for world hunger needs. Thank you to all that have participated so far. We have had some people even decide to only eat rice and beans or the kids against hunger food for an entire month. Gail Moffitt wrote, "For the month of September I am fasting and praying for those who are hungry in our community and around the world. Especially the famine in several African countries. I am eating one meal a day, only drinking water and having no dessert. It has been an amazing 8 days. Still fasting - I've noticed it being harder a for few days now, just ready to be done with it, I think. Then I remember those who have no choice but to be hungry. I find it hard to know how to pray for those in famine areas and especially those in Somalia with the violence all around them. It is good to know that God is God and sees all things. What a comfort that he is real and alive and bigger than the difficulties of this world. God is there to pull me through the hunger pains as he does those around the world." Thanks Gail and all of those who have participated thus far.

You can donate online by clicking here. You can pledge to skip a meal this month for the manna project by clicking here.

Day Nine

Today's focus is India. They recently experienced the worst flooding they have experience in over 100 years. This flooding destroyed much of their useable crop supply and they are experiencing a national food shortage. Please keep the people of India in your prayers.

Day Eight

IDES has worked in over 100 different countries. When a disaster strikes it usually causes the hunger situation in that country to worsen. Most recently flooding in India and Pakistan caused massive damage but it also destroyed over 1 million acres in useable crops. Please pray for all the people around the world that are experiencing a food crisis.

Day Seven

Today's focus is the Philippines. One of our missionary partners in the Philippines is Ross and Cheryl Wissmann. They sent us a list of food items eaten by the poor in the Philippines. If you would like to find out more about their ministry you can check out Cheryl's facebook profile by clicking here.

1. Nothing - literally - in harder times such as floods, drought, economic downturns, or just a bad day - the poorest people have nothing at all to eat.

2. In the cities like Manila, the poor will beg coins from the cars and then go and buy a /pandesal/ - a P1.00 (2 cents) very small breadroll - maybe 1" diameter. (The big /pandesal/ we have given the IDES folk when they were here was 10 cents each).

3. The beggar children go and buy glue and sniff it.

4. In the provinces - out in the country - there are various roots and leaves that grow wild in the tropics - there is one -/ lame/ or /name/ - a root that is poisonous and has to be boiled for 3 days before it can be eaten

5. Other things the poor in the countryside eat on a regular basis include:
a. /kamote/ tops - the leaves of a sweet potato or yam b. /kangkong/ - leaves that grow in the water
c. /casava/
d. /saba saging/ - a short fat banana with a very thick skin that can only be eaten if boiled
e. /niyog/ - the flesh or meat of a ripe coconut
f. small green mangoes Unlike most items on this list, these have some nutrition in them.

6. Those who live on the sea or by a stream may catch a little fish - the size of a sardine - and eat it - head, bones and all. Fish eyes are the delicacy. But most steams and coastal waters were fished out long, long ago. They will also be polluted to some extent. All of Manila Bay has had red tide disease.

7. The poor will often buy a few little dried fish. They are heavily salted.

8. Often, the poor will just buy a little (white) rice - maybe just 1/2 kilo - 60 cents worth - cook it (boil with water), and eat with a little non-iodized salt.

9. The beggars will wander around the streets, look in garbage bins, and eat whatever they find that day.

10. Poor families (4 to 8 persons - that may or may not include a healthy adult and will include small children and frail elderly) on a regular basis, will just eat 1 "meal" a day. When they get out of bed in the morning, they have no food and no money. One or more of them will scrounge around trying to get money. This may include begging, borrowing, or stealing. It may include selling cigarettes, candy, or the like at the street corner. It may be helping cars park. It may be helping in the rice paddy. Then, in the afternoon, when they have obtained a little money, they will spend it all and buy rice. If it has been an unsuccessful day, it may be late evening before they eat. If it has been a little more successful day, they will buy just 1 egg and put it with the rice. The cycle will begin all over again the next day. If the breadwinner is sick, it is disaster.

Day Six

Today's focus is on the hunger program Harvest of Talents. Every year people donate their time and their talents in order to raise money for World Hunger Needs. We have two Harvest of Talents events coming up this week.

Sept. 18-19 Michigantown (Indiana) Christian Church
Sept. 18 Chillicothe (Illinois) Christian Church
Sept. 25 Milford (Illinois) Christian Church
Oct. 16 Unity Christian Church, Marion, Indiana
Oct. 23 Lincoln (Illinois) Christian Church
Nov. 7 Rocklane Christian Church, Greenwood, IN
Nov. 17 Galesburg Christian Church, Kansas

Please pray for both the people who are donating goods and time for a good cause and for the people who will come and shop on these days. As always 100% of the funds raised will go to fight world hunger.

Day Five

Today's focus is Haiti. IDES has many partner missionaries and organizations in Haiti and Sharing the Gospel with Haiti wrote that, "IDES is funding the orphan's project in Haiti. These children have absolutely nothing having lost both parents. If we cannot help them they will starve. It is that simple. I.D.E.S. is doing all they can as they are stretched thin by aiding people all around the world." Many children are now hungry because one or two of the bread winners in their family was killed in the Earthquake. For only $5.00 you can feed an entire family for a month in Haiti through The Manna Project. Please lift them and Sharing the Gospel with Haiti in prayer.

Day Four - Kenya

Last year Kenya suffered from a severe drought. The people's livestock died and many were without food. IDES started development projects including ways to get water to crops and drought resistance goat projects in those areas. The people are still suffering and need your prayers.

Day Three - Philippines

IDES has many feeding programs in the Philippines. For only $5.00 you can feed a family for an entire month in the Philippines. Many times storms will come and wipe out homes and crops in the Philippines causing massive shortages of food. Please pray for the people and the food supply in the Philippines today.

Day Two - Haiti

Since the earthquake IDES volunteers have packed over 250,000 meals through our "GAP" (God Always ProvIDES) program. IDES helps with many feeding centers throughout Haiti. Today please pray for our missionaries in Haiti who continue to work to serve the needs of the people.

Day One

IDES is calling for people in the US to hear the cries of the poor and weak around the world. Just like the people of Nineveh who declared a fast, after Jonah proclaimed that, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." (Jonah 3:4) We also declare a nationwide 40 days of hunger called the manna project. We need people to dedicate to prayer during those forty days. We need people that will pick a day during the 40 days to fast or give up an expensive coffee for the poor around the world. For each coffee or meal out at a restaurant ($5.00) you can feed a family for a month through IDES and the manna project. We need people who will pick a day during the 40 days and eat only one menu item, like rice and beans, that the poor would eat in third world countries. We need you.

Will you help us by praying for this event? Will you help us by picking a day to fast or to only eat what the poor eat in third world countries? Will you help us by promoting this event to your friends and family?

You can sign up and learn more about the manna project at http://www.ides.org/manna.html

It is so easy to make a difference in someone's life forever.

*For each new facebook like or follow on twitter 6 meals will be provided through the manna project for free.

*For each expensive coffee or dessert that is skipped and then that money is given to the manna project an entire family will be fed.

Please pass this on to your friends and post it in your churches. Together we can make a difference for world hunger.

Thank you, IDES
