Severe drought conditions and extreme summer heat have caused hunger, dehydration, and acute health problems throughout much of India. In the month of May temperatures topped 120°F in several regions. As a result, there were reports of heat related deaths in multiple states.
Young children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses have been especially vulnerable to the effects of the heat.
In some regions, prolonged drought conditions have resulted in the total loss of crops grown in family garden plots and cultivated fields.
As potable water supplies have dwindled and vanished, many tens of thousands of India’s rural poor have left their homes and farms and migrated to distant, overcrowded cities where they are able to find enough water to sustain life, but lack adequate shelter and opportunities for work.
IDES is partnering with several Christian Church / Church of Christ missions to address this urgent need for water and food.
Lives are being saved because caring partners like you have provided the resources we depend on to offer help and hope.
In the Southern Indian State of Andhra Pradesh
IDES is working with one of our trusted mission partners to Drill wells in 13 poor rural villages. The life sustaining water they produce will provide much needed relief for more than 1,200 people.
The wells will also provide many opportunities for local believers to share the good news of Christ’s love and mercy.
Extreme temperatures and drought have resulted in the loss of food crops which the people of these villages rely on for their survival.
We have committed over $18,000 to these well drilling efforts.
In another district within the state of Andhra Pradesh we are partnering with a second restoration movement mission to feed even more desperately hungry families.
Those hunger relief efforts are focusing on 15 villages which have been especially hard-hit by the current crisis.
IDES is providing $30,000 to purchase and distribute rice, lentils and other food staples to residents of these 15 drought-ravaged villages.
Three States in Central India and Uttar Pradesh State in Northern India
In central India, summer weather patterns often produce drought. But this year’s conditions are worse than have been seen in more than a decade.
IDES is working with a long-time mission partner to bring help and hope to those affected by this growing crisis.
In this region IDES is providing $50,000 to drill wells in 20 communities across four states. The wells will relieve the suffering of thousands of families, and empower the witness of faithful evangelists serving Christ in each community. They are bearing witness to Jesus’ compassion for the people of each village, as they proclaim His offer of “living water… welling up to eternal life”.
Rain is Coming, but Help Is Still Needed
By God’s grace, annual monsoon rains began to fall over much of the drought parched region the third week of June. The monsoon season will bring relief from the oppressive heat, and will allow life sustaining water to revive dried and cracked streambeds, refill cisterns, and replenish underground aquifers.
Your help is still very much needed. The once parched fields will be replanted, but it will be months before the new crops can be harvested. In the meantime, we will be working with our mission partners to care for those who are struggling to feed their families.
The funds IDES is investing now to drill wells and dig deeper cisterns will help prevent suffering and the tragic loss of life when drought recurs next summer and beyond. With your help, we can provide the blessing of safe, refreshing, life-giving water for years to come.
Please pray for the quick arrival of rainfall in areas where the ground is still parched, and safe water remains scarce or non-existent. Also join us in praying that seasonal rainfall amounts will be sufficient to replenish declining underground aquifers.
