8 - 12 Special Prayer Need

Special Prayer Need:

We are requesting special prayer for Rick Jett, the executive director of IDES. Rick is scheduled for surgery in Indianapolis on Tuesday, August 13th, at 7:30am, to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm -- complicated by the need to protect his transplanted kidney during the surgery.

We are thankful that the doctors found the aneurysm, and are able to operate in a controlled environment rather than an emergency situation. Still it is a delicate surgery, and we need God's help. So please pray for Rick's healing and for God's protection of the IDES ministry! Thank you for lifting us up.

IDES receives the Charity Navigator 4 Star Charity Award for the third year in a row. Here is a short excerpt from what they had to say: "Only 10% of the charities we rate have received at least 3 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that International Disaster Emergency Service outperforms most other charities in America. This "exceptional" designation from Charity Navigator differentiates International Disaster Emergency Service from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust." - Charity Navigator

8-8 Massive Flooding In The Philippines/ 100 Dead

Please pray for those in the Philippines. Here is an update from one of our missionaries. "Manila is again in the middle of a huge flood. As much as half the city is under water. 1,000,000 people may have flooded homes. The volume of water is higher than Super-typhoon Ondoy in 2009. We have had three typhoons/tropical depressions in succession and three weeks of continuous rain. Most banks, government offices, and schools have been closed for days. There have been about 100 people killed. We hope the waters have peaked now but it continues to rain. At least two more days of rain are expected as the cyclone heads north. Many of our church members' homes are under water again.

Work continues in Mississippi and in Joplin following the outbreak of tornadoes this spring. Rick Chesnut is directing the efforts in Joplin, and has teams booked for the rest of this year. They can still use donations of non-perishable food items for distribution.

We desperately need skilled construction teams in northern Mississippi. We have been building storage buildings for those who lost their homes in the tornadoes, and are ready to start building our first house as soon as we can get groups scheduled to follow through with that effort. 6-17 - Important Notice For Volunteer Work Teams

The IDES ministry has developed a network of volunteers around the world - Christians who are willing to donate time & energy & resources to demonstrate God's love whenever disaster strikes!

Many volunteers have already come to Joplin and northern Mississippi. Work teams have helped with immediate clean up and distribution of supplies. Christians have offered compassion in working alongside homeowners to salvage what little, if anything was left of their personal belongings.

Many more volunteers are also ready to come and give assistance. One of the hardest things to do in times of crisis is to wait. . . on God, on assessments of need, and on local governments. And yet waiting sometimes enables us to be more effective in planning long-term ministry.

Joe Luttrell is coordinating the IDES relief efforts in Mississippi. Joe has established a base camp in Okolona, MS. He has had volunteers build storage sheds for the people who have lost their homes and need a place to secure their belongings. He is hoping to be able to build a house for an elderly couple once he gets a go-ahead from local officials. Joe has indicated that he could use between 20 to 25 skilled workers for what he is doing in MS. He has scheduled several teams already for July and the first of August. Rick Chesnut is coordinating the IDES relief efforts in the Joplin area. He is currently setting up a base camp at the West Side Christian Church to house volunteers. Rick has indicated when the base camp is ready he could accommodate 15 to 20 volunteers. The kind of work these volunteers will be doing is yet to be determined because we have not received the guidelines for rebuilding from the local officials.

We have a list of more than 2 dozen churches that are eager to send teams. We understand the frustration in waiting to respond. When you see people suffering, our desire is to immediately rush to their aid. Unfortunately, we have to wait for government officials to decide on requirements for rebuilding their area.

So, we ask for you to pray. Pray for the IDES staff as they navigate new territory in discerning how to help best in each of these situations. Pray for the Christian communities in Joplin and northern Mississippi as they try to utilize this opportunity to share Jesus in meeting practical needs of people. Pray for local government officials as they make decisions about requirements for rebuilding. Pray for volunteers to be patient in waiting on God's timing.

If you wish to be added to our list of workers, you may call the IDES office and give your information to Debra Tinkle, our Administrative Assistant. The phone number is 765-947-5100. The office hours are 8 AM to 4PM Monday-Friday. You may also email your information to dtinkle@ides.org. We ask that you call or email the IDES office because Joe and Rick are busy and do not have reliable internet service at this time. Thank you for your willingness to help and for your cooperation as we discern God's direction.

Japan Update: "Today's teams split up into two groups and visited different places that we have been frequenting, as well as a new spot, where they distributed food and supplies to over 100 people. They were able to return to two nursing homes that we have been visiting regularly. These are serving as evacuation centers, but not getting a lot of outside assistance. Our teams are received with open arms! " - Missionaries in Japan are making a great impact both physically and spiritually in that country.

Keep Praying For Japan

Workers at the nuclear power plant in Japan had to evacuate because of smoke. Please keep praying for the workers there and also for our missionary partners. Japan is only 1% Christian and we have an opportunity to share the Gospel with the people of Japan.

Our missionary partners plan to distribute clean food, clean water, and blankets to the area as many are without food, water, or shelter. Give today and know that 100% of your donation will go to help Japan. Click here to donate online.

Prayer Request From Japan:

Dear Prayer Warriors,

The greatest obstacle to recovery efforts right now is the threat of nuclear radiation from the power plants affected by the earthquake. Communication between the nuclear experts and the media has been very poor leading to panic in the stricken areas. In the Tokyo area, food shelves are running bare as people prepare for the worst. Gas rationing has limited all gas purchases to 4 gallons per vehicle. Scheduled power outages across several prefectures to conserve electricity has completely disrupted the train system causing more panic and frustration for millions of Japanese. Pray that the nuclear radiation leaks be resolved quickly so that continued rescue and recovery efforts can proceed.

At last count, there are 450,000 people staying in 1,200 shelters in the quake area. Those of us who have lived through hurricanes and other disasters know the stress and hopelessness that sets in after the initial shock. Their greatest physical need is bottled water and toilet paper - both of which have run out even in our own town. Father in heaven, hear our plea for mercy in our time of need.

Psalm 93:4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea - the LORD on high is mighty.

He is mighty to save.

IDES Will Be Getting Aid To Japan - 3/15/2011

IDES has made contact with missionaries on the field and will be getting aid to the people in this time of need. One of our contacts will be Team Expansion Japan. They have six units there (two teams) in Osaka and Tokyo. Here is an excerpt from an e-mail, from one of their missionaries, Chad Huddleston, in Osaka.

"It has been a trying and sad time in so many ways: whole towns are gone, thousands upon thousands are without homes and businesses. The news coverage, especially as people's personal videos begin to hit the channels, is simply horrific. And the unknown factor of a nuclear meltdown in the same area looms over it all. But we know that our God is Good and that His desire is to turn this situation around so that many will find peace and comfort and He will be glorified. This is the time for the Christians in Japan (as few as they are! less than 1%) to unite, rise up and be the light. We cannot allow this opportunity to love to pass us by. I ask you to lift us up in prayer."

They plan to distribute food and clean water to the area as of now and hopefully will be able to help in other ways in the future. Give today and know that 100% of your donation will go to help Japan. Click here to donate online.

8.9 Earthquake Hits Japan Causing Massive Damage

The largest Earthquake on record for Japan has caused massive damage and large Tsunami waves across the country. Over 500 have died and many are missing. Tsunami warnings have also been issued for Alaska and Hawaii. Please keep them in your prayers. We will be keeping you updated as information comes in on our website www.ides.org or on our facebook and twitter pages. IDES is still working in earthquake destroyed Haiti, the recent earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, and will do all we can in this recent disaster. There are three ways that you and your church can help.

1) Pray - Please keep the people in Japan in your prayers. Also keep Christchurch and Haiti in your prayers as well as IDES has ongoing projects in both countries.

2) Prayer Event - Help us hold a world-wide prayer event on Sunday. Pass this along to your churches and mission teams to have a prayer session this coming Sunday. Pray for our missionaries, the victims of the earthquakes, and that God can open doors around the world so more people will know him.

3) Give - If you would like to give to this disaster the best way to do that is to designate it disaster and as needs come in we will be able to divert it to the most desperate need. Click here to donate online.

IDES Helps In Christchurch, New Zealand After Earthquake Hits

It is two weeks today since the devastating earthquake that has taken over 165 lives with several people still missing, presumed dead. You can follow the shaking by clicking here. Everyone in NZ visits this site regularly. There were 8 more aftershocks on Saturday alone. That's not unusual, with quaking and shaking every hour or so, sometimes with shorter gaps between. It's the unexpectedness, the lack of warning, the total inability to defend yourself that seems to be wearing people down.

The weather is changing with cold nites making it less and less comfortable for those who are camping out in the back yards behind their damaged homes. The ministry team there has been working with university students who mobilised to help clear liquefaction & sewage from the yards, homes, and streets of many suburbs.

They've also coordinated meals for thousands of volunteers and emergency response teams, placing them in ideal locations to have conversations with people most affected. IDES has given money to help meet many needs, but the costs are still mounting. Click here to give online if you would like to help.

A container leaves Auckland tomorrow with baby wipes, diapers, food, tarps, ropes, various other items, including warm clothing. We've bought over 250 wheelbarrows, several shovels, and thousands of dollars of food.

Thank you for remembering us down here, for praying and caring and paying attention to New Zealand's well being. Thank you for your messages and notes and financial partnership and the encouragement you provide. I don't know how to express the gratitude I have for the confidence I gain from you standing with me in the ministry opportunities God takes me in to.
