Many of us dread going to the dentist or the doctor.
It's uncomfortable, it takes time from our work schedules, and some visits can be expensive.
For families in low-income and impoverished communities in the Philippines, these visits can be life-changing.
"A large majority of the [low-income] population cannot afford any health or medical insurance because of financial constraint," our local partner in the Philippines reported. "The average low-income wage earner is paid $10 - $15 per day, whereas the cost of a cooked medium-sized chicken (one dinner for most families) costs $7 - $9 each. Thus, no or minimal attention is paid to medical or health needs."
Feeding one's children is certainly the main priority for these families; however, their lack of access to medical care leads to more serious complications with preventable diseases and conditions. Some in the older population even die from untreated asthma or uncontrolled diabetes, merely because medications are too expensive.
Thanks to your faithful partnership, IDES recently blessed one of our mission partners in the Philippines with the resources necessary to host four free medical / dental / optical clinics for these families in need.
Our mission partner worked with the local church leaders and members to organize, prepare, and host each of the clinics in the community. The services provided include check-ups and diagnoses, cleanings and extractions, fluoride treatments, toothbrush and paste, eyeglasses and ointments, and much needed medicines.
"We thank God that we were able to offer a free medical, vision, and dental service for many of our neighbors, friends and church members as well," our partner said.
A total of 464 medical patients, 303 dental patients, and 64 optical patients were served and cared for in the name of Jesus Christ.
The local church leaders and members also offered prayer and counseling for anyone receiving services. Bibles were distributed to the families, and God's Word was shared with everyone who attended.
"Many have expressed their thanks to us because of that wonderful work, and some have attended our evangelistic Harvest Event the next day and were led to Christ," our partner said. "In fact during our that night 11 [people] came forward and confessed their faith in the Lord. After the event we were able to baptize them, and even on the following week still others were coming to be baptized."
These families' needs were met because you showed up for them. These families experienced the gracious love of Jesus because you were generous.
"We cannot explain the joy we feel when we somehow become the arms of Jesus in sharing His love and compassion with the people. Once again, we thank the Lord for you and IDES for the continued support."
