Have you ever found yourself half-awake in the middle of the night, miserably cold, realizing that you need to put another cover on the bed?
Your body is sending an urgent message by way of the shivering and goose-bumps it is producing, “I feel quite uncomfortable. Why don’t we get up and grab another blanket?” But your mind, drowsy and tired after an exhausting day, argues “Everything will be fine if we just roll over and go back to sleep.”
So, what do you do?
Often we just lie there, silently hoping we will drift off to slumber-land before any decision has to be made.
Indecision is a frustrating thing when it strikes at 2:00AM on a cold winter’s night. It is also a troublesome presence when it invades our lives during the waking hours of the day.
Indecision can needlessly complicate our lives, nibbling away at our joy and robbing us of our peace of mind. When important decisions are put off, postponed, and pushed to the back-burners of our consciousness, they have a way of consuming far more time and energy than the decision really requires.
As we enter into a new year, let me encourage you to take time to resolve some issues that are just too important to put off until later. I promise that once you do, not only will you sleep better at night, but your days will be filled with greater peace, joy and satisfaction:
If you have never made the decision to make Jesus both Lord and Savior in your life, do not wait any longer.
Tomorrow may sound more convenient, but you have no guarantee there will be any more tomorrows. II Corinthians 6:2 states with great urgency “Behold, now is the time of God’s favor, today is the day of salvation."
As you prayerfully consider your need for Jesus, here are some verses from the book of Romans that will be helpful:
Romans 3:23,24 We are all sinners who need Jesus’ forgiveness
Romans 6:23 God does not want to punish us, instead He offers us eternal life
Romans 3:22 We respond to God’s offer by believing in Jesus
Romans 10:9,10 We respond by confessing Jesus as our Lord
Romans 2:4 We respond by repenting and turning from sin (see also Acts 3:19 & 2:38)
Romans 6:1-4 We respond by being baptized into Jesus
Romans 5:1,2 As Jesus’ followers we now have peace with God (see also Romans 8:1)
Reach out to your minister, an elder at your church, or another mature Christian and ask them to visit with you about your desire to follow Jesus. Study these verses together with them to discover any steps you may still need to take as you follow Jesus.
Follow Him More Closely.
If you are already a follower of Jesus, and there is an area of your life that you know needs to be changed (a sin that you need to overcome, a realignment of your priorities, a commitment to greater faithfulness), then decide today how things are going to be in the year 2017.
Join your voice to the declaration of Joshua who led God’s people to victory as they conquered the promised land of Canaan “Choose for yourselves this day, whom you will serve........as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
I pray that God will provide you with wisdom and grant you His strength as you address the important issues in your life, and make the decisions that are truly best.
