"Timoun grangou pa tande ou.”
In Haitian Creole, this phrases means, “A hungry child cannot hear what you are saying." IDES' partners in Haiti know this to be true first hand. Children who are fortunate enough to be able to attend school often must attend without knowing if they will eat anything that day. As hunger pangs growl in their tummies, it becomes increasingly difficult to pay attention to the teacher. The students' hunger leads to a chronic inability to focus, and subsequently, to learn.
"They are grateful to be there but their bodies are weak and tired from not getting the nutrition that they need," one principal in Haiti lamented. Thankfully, this does not have to be the end of these students' story.
Through your generosity and your service, one of our partner's schools now has an operational kitchen, and nutritious food to provide for lunch for the students 2-3 times per week.
Having a guaranteed meal tremendously improved the students' health, as well as their ability to focus during class. These improvements alone are enough reason to continue blessing others through generosity and service. But, the impacts are more than physical -- they are spiritual, too.
The principal of this school also serves as the preacher of the local church, which meets in the same building as the school does.
"This Christian man knows that teaching the children about Christ is what makes the eternal difference in their lives," our partner said. "If we are going to reach their hearts for God, we first have to provide food for their bellies, so that their minds can be alert to be filled with the knowledge of Jesus and His Love and sacrifice for them."
These blessings would not be possible without your willingness to give gifts of love and compassion in the name of Jesus Christ. Whether serving through our Food-Packing or Harvest of Talents programs, or giving financially, you can make hope possible for students just like these, and other families around the world who are in need.
During the Christmas season, we celebrate the ultimate Gift from God to all of us: Jesus Christ. One of the ways we celebrate is by giving gifts to friends and family members out.
It can be a challenge to find the perfect Christmas gift. But the joy of connecting the right gift with the right recipient makes it all worthwhile. Is there room for one more gift around your Christmas tree?
As you draft this year’s list, please consider a gift that will bless someone who is striving to create a better future for themselves and their family. IDES’ Gift Catalog contains 40 items that are guaranteed to bring joy and gratitude to a precious child of God somewhere in the developing world.
