I am a longtime fan of Christian music in all its forms. As a young boy I recall listening to the tight vocal harmonies of the Blackwood Brothers, the Gospel Lads, and the Imperials. During my high school and college days I went on to discover the music of Amy Grant, Russ Taff, and Petra. In recent years the bands Casting Crowns and Mercy Me have captured my interest.
But the sacred music I most enjoy, and the variety I believe to be most needed in our world today is not limited to any particular artist. My favorite is a musical tradition older than any modern style. It even predates traditional hymns and Gregorian chant. Although it could be called Soul Music, it has nothing to do with the R&B / jazz / gospel influenced sound that emerged in the late 50's and early 60’s.
Confused? Here’s a hint; it is the music to which David refers in Psalm 108:1-5. In the first verse of that Psalm he declares: “My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.”
It is true that David was writing a psalm that would literally be sung to a certain meter, with the accompaniment of harp and lyre. But rather than give us just another song, he gives us a new perspective on life!
I will sing and make music with all my soul. When our reason for living is to glorify God in all that we are and all that we do, then our very lives become a sonata, a chorus, a symphony of praise!
Day in and day out we have the opportunity to worship God with the joyful music of purposeful living. We have the privilege of exalting His name as we keep time with his good, pleasing and perfect will. With each passing moment we are given the chance to extol His praises as our thoughts, words and actions coalesce to produce the pleasing harmony of God’s will being done on earth as it is in heaven.
IDES’ purpose is to meet needs in the name of Jesus. We provide help in His name to believers and unbelievers alike. We partner with Christ’s servants around the globe to assist disaster victims, feed the hungry, care for the sick, and lift up the poor. Since 1973 we have offered His help and hope to those who are hurting in 114 separate nations. In each project we undertake, it is our prayer that God will be glorified as needs are met in concert with the local body of Christ.
We serve a God of great beauty and boundless mercy. He alone holds the answer to everyone’s greatest need. When our lives, like fine musical instruments, are jointly tuned to match the perfect pitch of His resounding love, they will produce the beautiful music of saving grace which the world so desperately needs to hear. Let us serve together in such a way that God is pleased by our unending chorus of praise.
