"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Meet Wilsner. He is 22 years old, and grew up and lives in one of the most desperately poor communities in Haiti. According to the United States Central Intelligence, Haiti is estimated to have a nearly 40% unemployment rate since the earthquake in 2010, with 80% of the country living at or below the poverty line.
At IDES, we believe these statistics can change and are changing. No matter how devastating the disaster, no matter how deep the economic crisis, no matter how overwhelming the recovery process: our God Almighty will overcome and work through it. Via strategic partnerships with missions all over the world, IDES is able to help develop sustainable sources of income for families and communities in Jesus' name. We, along with our partner missions, want to give a "hand-up" instead of just a "hand-out".
For example, take Wilsner, pictured above. IDES was blessed with the opportunity to help in funding his chicken coop, part of our partner in Haiti's Smallholder Poultry Project. For 2.5 years now, "Wilsner used his profit to expand his coop, adding capacity for more chicks and thus increasing his income. We see examples of free enterprise and our farmers being industrious time and time again. Because Wilsner has this business, and an income, he has become a leader in his community."
Projects such as these work in 3 levels of development. First, they provide poor families and individuals a chance to develop a source of income and often a source of food. Second, they help to develop sustainable communities by training leaders from within. Last and most importantly, they develop relationships that lead individuals without hope to know and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
"For the farmers being given this opportunity it changes their life drastically. They no longer have to worry about how to feed their families. They can send their children to school, and take care of the basic needs for their family," reports our partner in Haiti. "Training consists of everything from business skills and poultry knowledge to discipleship and training on biblical stewardship principles."
