The time had come for harvest in 9 villages in Thailand.
Families whose lives center around the agricultural calendar took to the fields to cut and bundle the rice. This harvest would provide food for themselves, and for their livestock for the entire coming year. The bundles were stacked tall and neatly, ready to dry for several days before the milling process began, and then...
Torrential rain poured from the sky, quickly flooding the low-lying villages. In an alarmingly short amount of time, the families' harvest was completely washed away or destroyed beyond use before they had the opportunity to save the bundles.
In other words, the families were left without any food for the rest of the year, and with nothing to feed their livestock. This loss would be devastating, leading to chronic hunger and malnutrition. And, without any feed for their income-generating livestock, the animals would be underdeveloped and at risk of sickness or death. This was a hopeless situation from all perspectives.
At just the right time, when it seemed that all hope was lost, you showed up for these families. Thanks to your faithfulness, IDES was able to bless our mission partner in the region with emergency food relief once the waters receded.
"Our goal was to provide immediate relief to nine tribal villages, approximately 115 families, who had lost most or all of their harvested rice to the flash flood in the Northern part of Thailand," our partner reported.
Your generosity funded the purchase of 2,455 sacks of unhusked rice to be distributed evenly in each village in the name of Jesus Christ.
"Unhusked rice was [specifically] requested because it provides two benefits: it can be milled and eaten, AND it can also be planted for future rice harvests," our partner said.
The rice was distributed to the families, ensuring that they would have enough food for the next 5 months, while also having feed for their livestock. But, as was mentioned before, the flash flooding had destroyed the villages' harvest for an entire year. Five months' worth of rice was an amazing blessing, but it would run out by the summer. Taking this into consideration, our mission partner in Thailand requested in faith that the assistance be extended to cover the rest of the year, if possible.
Thanks to you, and by God's grace, we have committed to meeting that need. An additional 2,455 sacks of rice have been distributed in the 9 villages, so that each family may also plant unhusked rice for a full harvest reaping this coming fall. In other words, the families now have food for the entire year, and additional feed for their livestock. This emergency food assistance is also opening the door for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be shared -- which is our primary focus at IDES.
"The local pastor has baptized new believers," our partner reported. "The local officials (who are Buddhist) have been impressed by the love shown by Christians to others in need. These villages are predominately Christian who continue to reach out to the unbelievers."
Praise God! In an effort to say "Thank You" to all of you and to praise God together, the families sent a video of themselves singing hymns in their native language. (View it below.) What a beautiful sound, after God's people have partnered together to meet the needs of those who are suffering around the world!
