Hurricane Relief Update

IDES will begin scheduling groups again after February 1. After this date, we will be requesting volunteers be accompanied by someone with specialized experience (plumbing, dry wall, electricians, etc.).

Hurricane Florence & Michael Relief Update
January 1, 2018

IDES has worked with at least 8 church in these affected areas. We still have shower trailers and some equipment at the New Bern, NC base-camp and Panama City, FL base-camp.  At this point, IDES has provided at least 7 loads of sheds. We have partners committed to long-term relief efforts on the ground in New Bern, North Carolina.  They will be working with volunteer teams in the second phase of IDES efforts: Home repair.  This is a long, expensive process.

IDES continues to lead volunteer teams working in Panama City, FL and will continue to lead and facilitate efforts in that area for the foreseeable future as the churches have suffered a great deal of damage to their buildings and homes and are not in a position to lead these efforts on their own.  We are transitioning from purely clean-up to home repair (again, a long, expensive process). This involves bringing in contractors or skilled leaders to manage volunteer teams.

Our DART coordinator will be travelling down to Panama City after the first of the year to assist in cleanup, shed building, and to assess the need for major repairs that have been identified by the local churches.  Once the assessment is complete, IDES will be able to create a plan for providing materials, skilled volunteers, and/or contractors.

As always, IDES is providing this Help and Hope through and with the local Christian Churches in order to ensure these families have a long-term connection to those churches even after IDES' involvement in the area is complete.

What to Know

  • IDES will begin scheduling groups again after February 1. After this date, we will be requesting volunteers be accompanied by someone with specialized experience (plumbing, dry wall, electricians, etc.).
  • Each person who is going to volunteer should have a copy of IDES Prepare to Respond Manual prior to your departure.
  • Please keep your volunteer group under 20 people. We would like for all volunteers to be over the age of 15 for liability reasons.
  • IDES must have an accurate head count from your group before you leave in order to give you information about your housing arrangements.
  • Cell phone reception in the area is very patchy.
  • Housing is provided either at our partner church or at a nearby by camp. Please bring bedding, proper clothing, bug spray, sunscreen, hygiene products, dry foods, and water. Volunteers currently deployed have recommended incoming volunteers bring tents.
  • Please be aware that disaster sites now have water but no electricity.
  • Please make note that disaster site curfew is 10 pm EST.
  • The nearest place to get food / shop is an hour away. There is a propane grill on site.
  • You are expected to cover all of your own costs and to make your own travel arrangements. If IDES schedules another group to go at the same time as you, IDES will give you their contact information to make carpooling a possibility.
  • Please be aware that, you may be sent away if you do not have proper PPE (see right).
  • Volunteers are currently doing clean-up projects meaning minimal skill is required - all abilities are welcome.
  • If you are able, disaster sites need gas / propane, first aid, generators, tarps, nails, and LOTS of chainsaws.

Once IDES confirms your volunteer date, you will be connected
          with disaster site leadership.

What to Bring

  • Heavy work gloves – either all-leather or leather palm, not light garden or cotton gloves. Most disaster debris is sharp metal or splintered wood.
  • Sturdy footwear – ankle-high, leather boots are best, not tennis shoes. Consider steel-toed boots. One-third of injuries at disaster work sites are foot injuries.
  • Extra pairs of cushioned or work socks – your feet will get wet. Changing socks once or twice a day greatly add to your personal comfort.
  • N95-rated dust mask (available at any do-it-yourself center), N95 not mere filter mask. Mold and airborne dust are significant threats at disaster sites.
  • Long pants and long sleeve shirt, simply to protect you from scratches and dirt as you work at disaster sites.
  • Medical nitrile/latex gloves for handling wet objects. Many people wear these under the leather gloves. Whenever possible, avoid skin contact with flood water.
  • Eye protection – sunglasses, prescription glasses, safety glasses, full goggles. Use safety glasses to protect your eye from injury while handling disaster debris or splashed flood water.
  • Head protection – a sock cap, ball cap or sun hat will offer some protection against head bumps and scrapes while cleaning up. Some disaster areas require a hard hat.
  • Knee and/or elbow pads – depending on the work you are doing knee pads make working on the floor more comfortable, while elbow pads protect you from some work injuries.
  • Small LED flashlight – think of a flashlight as a piece of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). With electricity off in so many locations, you may actually need a flashlight at some sites.
  • Hand sanitizer – either liquid or wipes. If your hands are “dirty” use soap and water. If your hands are “clean” use hand sanitizer.
  • If you are able, disaster sites need gas / propane, first aid, generators, tarps, nails, and LOTS of chainsaws.
